Publix Raises Over $331,000 for Local Charities

Publix Super Markets Atlanta Division raised $331,834 during the 2008 Food For All holiday season fundraiser. The campaign gave customers the opportunity to make a $1, $3 or $5 contribution during checkout. Thirty-four regional charities were presented with checks during the month of May, including a $3,135.65 check to The Children’s Village at Christian City.

Clayton State to Streamline Education for Registered Nurses

Following the recent action of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG), Clayton State University’s School of Nursing is preparing to streamline the higher education process for Registered Nurses (RN). The RN-MSN program will be streamlined for licensed RNs who don’t have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing but are interested in the Masters program, giving them the opportunity to earn both a BSN and MSN at the same time. The new program will help address the critical shortage of nursing personnel statewide.

HMC Wound Healing Center Earns Joint Commission Certification

Henry Medical Center’s Wound Healing Center, which specializes in the treatment of chronic wounds that have not responded to previous treatment in more than 30 days, has been awarded the Joint Commission’s Certificate of Distinction for wound care.

“The staff and I are proud to participate in a program at HMC which enhances the high standard of care being provided to such a great community,” says program director Karen Benedikt.

HMC Relays for a Cancer Cure

Henry Medical Center employees, family members and friends rallied together Friday night, May 1 to show their determination to find a cure for cancer. HMC hosted three tents and sold cotton candy, peanuts, fish sandwiches, hotdogs, hamburgers, sodas and water during the evening as part of its fundraising efforts; they raised $3,216.72 during this year’s Relay for Life campaign.

HMC’s Laurel Park to Receive National Award

Henry Medical Center’s Laurel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation facility has been recognized as one of the 2009 recipients of the Step I National Quality Award presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). This year 664 nursing and assisted living facilities from across the nation applied for the quality award at this level. Laurel Park was one of 435 facilities to receive the award. Awards will be presented during AHCA/NCAL’s 60th Annual Convention and Exposition October 4-7, 2009 in Chicago, IL.

HMC Offers Free Prostate Screenings

Henry Medical Center will provide free prostate screenings on Sat, Sept 19, 9am-2pm in the Foundation Education Center. Candidates must be male; 40 or older (35-40 with a family history of prostate cancer); with no personal history of prostate cancer, no blood in urine, no pain on urination or difficulty urinating; and must not have participated in a prostate screening in the last year. HMC Announces New Performance Improvement Director

Jeff Frehse is Henry Medical Center’s new Performance Improvement Director. A certified healthcare professional in risk management, Frehse brings more than 30 years of experience. He comes to HMC from his previous position as director of Risk Management and Compliance at St. Mary’s Health Care System in Athens.

Lake Spivey Road Race

The second annual Lake Spivey Road Race 15K / 5K / 1M and Tot-Trot is scheduled for Sat, Nov 7, 8am at Clayton County International Park. The 15K course, one of only 3 USATF certified 15K courses in Georgia, is one of the prettiest in the state it includes neighborhoods around Lake Spivey and Lake Jodeco. The 5K course is also USATF certified. The race benefits Rainbow House, a shelter for abused and neglected children. PFH Offers Weekend Heart Disease Screening

Piedmont Fayette Hospital (PFH) now offers Cardiac CT for Calcium Scoring screenings on Saturday mornings. Cardiac scoring helps physicians determine a patient’s risk for heart disease, even if they currently have no symptoms. Early detection can make an enormous difference in effective treatment for heart disease. A 64-slice CT (computed tomography) scanner takes pictures of the heart and determines calcium build-up in the arteries, a direct indication of heart disease.

The simple, non-invasive procedure takes 15 minutes and costs $125. Doctors’ referrals and appointments are required. Call 770-719-7007 to schedule an appointment.

PFH Named 2009 Most Wired Hospital for Fifth Consecutive Year

Piedmont Fayette Hospital has been named one of the nation’s Most Wired hospitals, according to the results of the 2009 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. Three of the five Georgia hospitals named to the list are part of the Piedmont Healthcare system.

HMC Celebrates Food, Nutrition and Environmental Service Employees

Henry Medical Center recently joined Sodexo, the hospital’s food and facilities management company, to host the 3rd Annual Employee Appreciation Day. On June 17, staff members from the hospital’s food and environmental services departments celebrated the day with an outdoor barbecue held on the hospital campus. Special recognition was given to four employees who go that extra mile in caring for hospital patients and visitors: Regenia Smith, Alice George, Gloribel Deleon and Mary High.

HMC Receives Top Marketing & Public Relations Awards

Henry Medical Center recently received three gold Target awards from Georgia Hospital Association’s Society for Healthcare Marketing & Public Relations. HMC earned the awards for: its maternity billboard, She’s everything. To you, and to us.; the hospital’s diagnostic imaging campaign, Image is Everything, aimed at local physicians; and photography.

Hospitals all across Georgia competed for top recognition in numerous marketing and public relations categories. Judging was conducted by the Illinois Hospital Association.

HMC Volunteers Honored at United Way Banquet

The United Way of Henry County recognized Shirley Gideon and Dawn Pompey, both Henry Medical Center Auxiliary volunteers, at its Ninth Annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet in April. Gideon, president of the HMC Auxiliary, has been a volunteer at HMC for 7 years and has contributed more than 3,200 hours. Pompey, the HMC Auxiliary Hospitality Coordinator, has been a HMC volunteer for the past 3 years and has contributed over 500 hours of service. In addition, HMC was presented with an award for its continued support as presenting sponsor of the event for the past nine years.

HMC Announces New Operating Board Chair

Steve Kay was recently named chair of the Henry Medical Center, Inc. Operating Board. Kay has served on various HMC boards since his first appointment to the Hospital Authority in 1987. Along with his current role as chair of the HMC, Inc. Operating Board (a position he held in the late 1990s), Kay is also chair of the hospital’s Business Development committee and vice chair of the Hospital Authority. Kay and his wife, Angela, have three children and have lived in Henry County for 24 years.

HMC Welcomes Back Partner in Education Teachers

10th Annual Morehouse College Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

PFH Increases Access to Breast Services

Piedmont Fayette Hospital will be able to increase local access to breast services thanks to grants from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta Affiliate. The grants make it possible for Piedmont Fayette to increase services to uninsured and underinsured women. The $325,000, which was awarded to Piedmont Hospital and PFH, is an increase of $196,000 over the last program year and should help the hospitals serve a combined total of 800 additional patients.

Piedmont Healthcare Opens Piedmont Surgery Specialists in Newnan

Piedmont Newnan Hospital (PNH) welcomed general surgeon Sharon Davis, MD, FACS, to its medical staff and in July, Dr. Davis and Piedmont Healthcare opened Piedmont Surgery Specialists on PNH’s campus at 64 Hospital Road in Newnan.

Powers Court Medical Center Coming to Tyrone

A new multi-specialty medical center is being developed in Tyrone off Hwy 74, just 10 minutes from Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

The multi-phased Medical Center will house five Medical Office Buildings (MOB), for a total of approximately 100,000 square feet of space. Powers Court Medical Center will contain potential medical specialties such as: Internal Medicine, Imaging, Family Medicine, Pain Management, Cardiology, Oncology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Podiatry, General Surgery, Urology, and Pulmonology.

The development is spearheaded by Jeffrey Curtis, DO, FACOFP, Senior AME, founder and owner of The Doctor’s Office in Peachtree City and surrounding areas. Dr. Curtis states, "Powers Court Medical Center is an investment opportunity for physicians to become active owners in their own MOB as well as tenants."

The design phase has been completed, and pre-leasing is under way with a projected construction date to begin in late 2009, and a projected completion date of Fall 2010.  Medical Structures of America, LLC has planned the Development. Teen Volunteer Program Offers Learning Opportunity

Twenty-one teens, ages 16 to 18 years old, served the community this summer at Henry Medical Center as part of the hospital’s teen volunteer program, sponsored by HMC’s Auxiliary. The teens received hands-on learning in many different medical fields while they served 40 to 50 hours over a six-week period during summer break.
